Hi all. Before I commit to buy udoo and use it as a bsd firewall I need to make sure that 1. Udoo will be able to install opensense 2. Udoo will be able to run it fast and secure. ( got 1 gb fiber net) 3. Will I be able to fit the dual ethernet module together with the m2 ssd module. It looks like that the connector on the ethernet module take up the space that the ssd would have to use. Have anyone tried this combo? Will udoo work for my intended use?
You can't use both dual-ethernet and m2-ssd at the same time since they both use same Key-B M.2 slot.
I want to add that you can install an ssd through SATA if there is any interest in that, and still use the m.2 key-b slot for dual ethernet.
As long as you use a 2.5" sata drive you won't need external power. There is a power connector that can be used to supply the sata drive with power. (See: https://shop.udoo.org/usa/sata-data-and-power-cables-for-udoo-x86.html for the cable). I'm currently running a single sata drive using that cable without issues.
Depending on your case and power consumption, you can probably grab the 12v from the existing power supply. I split the incoming power cable and have a 3.5" mechanical drive running off of it. Even under heavy load its not reaching the 3A limit of the supply. Or if you are worried you could always use a single 12v supply with higher current.
I'm currently running OPNsense 17.7 on a UDOO. Unfortunatly, I couldn't make the BSD that OPNsense uses see the eMMC .. but I think/hope that will be fixed once OPNsense updates to FreeBSD 12. I've already ordered the dual ethernet module, so I can give you an answer on the 1G fiber, when it arrives and I get it installed .. Regards, Rune Andresen
Hi Rune, fellow norwegian. I have 1 gb fiber internet and several servers, users on my network. That's why I need a fast, powerful firewall. I like to find hardware that's able to do that. I hope udoo will do everything I ask of it. I'll await your ethernet module reply Cheers
Hi James I got sidetracked and left the UDOO running OPNsense from a SD-card and with VLAN-tagging. It worked fine (until the SD-card broke), so I didn't get around to tinker with the dual port[1] :-/ Regards, Rune Andresen [1]: If it ain't broken, don't 'fix' it .. ;-)
