The small boot image mentioned in the docs, qdl-sata.img.zip, is not there at the end of the link (tried wget). When it is there, is it valid for UDOObuntu 2.1.2?

You mean the image that you can download from this page: https://www.udoo.org/docs/Hardware_&_Accessories/Boot_from_SATA.html It seems to be just there in the zip file......
