A look at the schematic shows battery is wired-OR with 3.3v supply rail and powers i.MX processor pin called VDD_SNVS_IN which I'm guessing powers an internal RTC circuit. The data sheet for that processor is nearly 6,000 pages long and unusually cryptic!
