I received my Udoo Bolt v8 two days ago, assembled it yesterday and .. was shocked by the fan noise! This now is the loudest appliance in my whole household even putting our kitchen hood to shame. Sorry, but with that noise it is not fit for being used anywhere in my office or lab .. maybe the cellar. But then again I could have bought another blade. Looking forward for an update soon.
Ciao Erkki, I replied to the topic you've opened, I'll do it here too by copy/pastying. Please in the future avoid opening a new topic for a topic that is already in the forum, or I'll have to remove it. "the BIOS update the guys are working on is huge, and it includes the fan among many other things. They are currently starting to test the BIOS to tweak it and make sure everything starts smoothly before it's published. Thank you for being so involved!"
I wonder how muck work it would take to program the Arduino as a fan controller, but it would take a temperature sensor as I doubt the Arduino side has access to the motherboard sensor.
Looks do-able from a quick look at various articles. I'll see if I can't get something simple started over the weekend.
The current CPU fan is controlled/affected by two signals: 1) a motor control signal from the embedded controller IC MEC1705 (which derives its signals from its own EC firmware algorithm,) I think in the later firmware it may be in the form of PWM control as opposed to today's ON/OFF control. 2) a CPU_temperature_too_high signal from the APU itself (probably just a simple form of over-temperature based on threshold crossing.) This one is AFAIK, "enabling" gate function. If no plan to not to use the existing BOLT design, such as build your own Arduino, temp sensor input, fan driver circuit to drive a fan, that's a different story.
Thanks Yetii for your effort! I find a 5V Single-phase Full-wave Fan Motor Driver - Rohm BD69060GFT https://www.rohm.com/products/motor-actuator-drivers/fan-motor/bd69060gft-product Hope this help!
Ciao noxqs, we're beta testing the BIOS update. If you'd like to join the beta please message me privately with a valid email address to send the update to.
Hi Evaloverde, I would delighted to be part of your QA team. I am not using the Bolt because it's too noisy for my office environment, but it's here on my desk. I am familiar with the process of upgrading BIOS and hope to speed up the process of completing. You can use the email I use in this forum: targhan@gmail.com for distribution.
I have my new bolt setup, the fan starts and stops constantly. If nothing else, I'd like to have the ability to have the fan set to idle instead of shut off then on again. Any updates on the bios updates?
Yes there is, it's in that zip, and it is quite comprehensive comparing to what you get from usual PC vendors (which is mostly none). It won't give better insight into fan situation though (it does mention existence of "bad" fan), but at least it indicates there was actually some work done that relates to it.
