How to set up / utilize the Bolt Embedded Controller GPIOs ?

    The Bolt manual talks about the Embedded Controller (not Arduino) making additional GPIOs available, but I couldn't see any details anywhere on how to actually set up, access and use these? Is there any further details / documentation / examples for the embedded controller, and how to utilize it anywhere?
