Ciao UDOOers, today’s topic is simple: we talk about the difference between UDOO boards and consumer boards, AKA the difference between industrial goods and consumer goods.
UDOO boards are composed mostly of industrial components and go through industrial-grade certifications.
To put it simply, electronic goods produced for industrial purposes are objectively better. Wanna know why?
Industrial electronics are built to last longer.
In the industrial world, what everyone needs is something reliable that lasts through the years even if it’s used constantly. Big factories have hundreds, thousands of boards installed around constantly on. Try and imagine the costs of replacing those every 2-3 years. Unacceptable. That’s why industrial goods are built to be more resistant and last longer through the years
Consumer goods are usually supported for 2 years, industrial goods are guaranteed for 7/10.
Of course each factory wants something that lasts, and is supported for long periods of time. As a factory owner, if 10 boards need to be repaired after 5 years, I want to be sure that they’re still supported, all the components are still produced and that, overall, my company doesn’t need to buy them anew and spend more money.
Usually consumers use their PCs for a few hours a day, in factories most SbCs are never off.
That means that industrial goods are built to withstand heavier workloads and support the neverending, tireless work of these little machines. Sometimes they need to monitor the status of machines that could be dangerous if they break, so not being able to withstand a long workload is not an option.
Industrial SBCs can go where we humans can’t. Literally. Generally SBCs are designed to withstand both low and high temperatures, but some boards go beyond that. Some industrial boards can work with temperatures as low as -40° with ease. Isn’t it cool? The work behind building a board like that is truly fascinating, so I won’t start blabbering further, promised.
